Autumn | Windows XP's Greatest Mystery
In early 2006, Vanity Fair columnist, Nick Tosches, was bored at his computer shuffling through the wallpapers that came with his new Windows XP machine, until he came across one with a very simple title: Autumn. Encapsulated by its warm colors and tender leaves, Nick needed an escape from his monotonous work environment and to instead visit this dreamlike place in real life.
This would prove to be extremely difficult, however, as his research would back him into a corner at every turn. Nick's journey would lead to an online scavenger hunt that would continue across multiple communities throughout the next two decades.
